Gulzig is our wild and funky version of the immensely popular NEIPA.
Since everyone’s going crazy over hazy New England IPAs we thought it would be fun to make a wild version of this style. Little did we know that the yeast blend we used (Funktown and Amalgamation) would go totally nuts in the tank and completely devour the double dryhop, with surprising flavours as a result. We wanted wild and we got it in spades! Gulzig is a beer that has very atypical hop and Brett characteristics, not at all what you might expect from a double dryhopped wild ale, but we couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out. It steered away from the exotic, tropical notes that are usually associated with Brett beers and became something altogether more European, dare we say Dutch. Gulzig is a mildly tart and bitter pale ale with lots of fruity notes and a good deal of barnyard funk. Juicy tangerine, a touch of leather and subtle notes of blackberry in the finish make this Bretty beer a surprisingly warm and familiar experience that will bring out the glutton in you.
