Gelders Gerstenat

Do you want to help us make 100% local
beer?

Help us build our brewery

The success of our first crowdfunding has inspired us to take it up a notch, because we want to continue brewing with our own Nevel barley and locally grown hops. Our mission is still to use only resources from Gelderland, the Dutch province where our brewery has its roots. So that we can keep making wild, adventurous, 100% Gelders beer for you.

100% local beer
Working directly with local farmers without intermediaries means we have to finance the planting and harvest of the crops in one go, at the end of the season. Afterwards, we also have to malt our barley at a local floor malting house. To be able to do all of this on a yearly basis we will be organising a crowdfunding every year from now on. For only €99,- you can make sure we can continue brewing with natural, unsprayed, locally grown hops and grains in this year and the next. Are you in?

Join us!
How can you support us? Easy: by purchasing a Gelders Gerstenat beer box via the button below. You’re buying the beers now and will get them as soon as they are ready, in the spring of 2021. This box consists of:

– 5 bottles (75cl) Gelders Gerstenat beer, a beer with all Gelders ingredients. Last year we treated our crowdfunders to a wild blonde ale with local malt, hops, yarrow flowers, thyme blossom and fresh hay directly from the farm. For this new round we’re going to brew something equally spectacular that will literally give you a taste of Nijmegen’s rural environment.
– 1 bottle (75cl) of an exclusive double barrel beer that will be made specially for all new crowdfunders and won’t be available outside our brewery. Last year we created Balsem, a single barrel wild ale with white peaches and rosemary that was aged for 21 months. We’ll make sure to concoct a similarly unique beer again this year!
– Visiting the Gelders Gerstenat brew days in October (dates will follow). Like last year, we’re inviting our farmers to speak about their organic hops, barley and herbs and why decided to work together with us. Our tasting room is open, there is a food truck where you can buy something to eat and you can have a look around our brewery. The first drink is on the house.
– Visiting the release of the Gelders Gerstenat beers, where you will receive your beer box. If you can’t come, we will send the box to you. The release date depends on when the beers are ready, we’re expecting this to be in spring 2021. You will get an update from us when the time is there.

Background
We have been brewing for a while with the amazing organic hops from local hop growers Hop for Bier and Hogenelst Hop. With this new investment round, we can keep working with them, so that we can continue to brew with their local hops.

In addition, we’re growing our own unsprayed malted barley in the hills near Nijmegen. To accomplish this we work together with local farmers Hans Lamers and Gordons Spoor. This natural barley is then malted at local floor malting house Masterveld, to make 100% Gelders malt. We can continue these collaborations with the money from the new crowdfunding. We’re also hoping to have our own specialty malts (caramel or roasted malts) made by Masterveld in the near future.

Our annual Gelders Gerstenat crowdfunding is not just about making beer. If you support us, you’re not only helping our brewery, but you’re also boosting our local economy. You’re investing in the people who have had the courage to preserve the less popular “forgotten” crops of this region from extinction, so a bunch of crazy brewers could get their hands on it. You’re investing in hop and grain farmers who dared to tailor their cultivation to our specific wishes, without knowing whether the harvest would be a success. You’re contributing to the survival of the small sustainable initiatives that we cooperate with.

With your help, we can hopefully set an example for other breweries who would like to work locally and sustainably, but are not yet ready to take this step.

Honest beer in which the Gelderland terroir can be tasted. Special ingredients play a leading role without ever disturbing the typical Nevel balance and subtlety. Unique in the Netherlands!
